School Tours

During the months of September and October, Schwallier’s Country Basket will open the orchard to give school groups a first hand opportunity to visit a working family farm.  Weekday apple tours are led by our knowledgeable staff members and are a great educational experience! Students will learn about the farm, pollination, growing and raising apples, harvesting apples, and other fun apple facts.

Each tour includes:

  • Educational talk the apple cycle from pollination to harvest.
  • Time to visit with the farm animals, including baby goats.
  • Fun time on the slide and the straw barn.
  • A snack time consisting of a fresh donut, apple, and a cup of cider.
  • A trip to the pumpkin patch to pick a small pumpkin.
  • A tour of the farm market store.

Other considerations:

  • Please allow approximately one hour and fifteen minutes for this tour.
  • Please prepare your class and yourself for inclement weather and field conditions.
  • Please bring a bag to carry the pumpkin.

  • An apple orchard is a busy place! Orchards are full of equipment and workers who are rushing to get the crop harvested and stored and there may be additional schools or classes visiting at the same time.
  • Portable restrooms are also available.

All tours take place between 9am and 5pm, and must be scheduled in advance by calling or emailing Schwallier’s Country Basket at 616-785-9896 or apples@schwalliers.com.
